    Description

The last seltzer shop in the Bronx closed in 1996. At that time I briefly filled my seltzer bottles at Scholz Bros in Queens, NY.  That business would remain for only another year, and now out of the hundreds of seltzer shops that had existed in the heyday of this business, only one remains in city of New York-in Brooklyn. Scholz Bros was founded in 1920, a year after my grandfather began delivering seltzer with a horse drawn cart in 1919.
By that time in 1996, the grandson Richie Scholz, who would very shortly sell off his property and liquidate his business, had scaled down his operation. When I went there to fill up my seltzer he had no current bill to give me so he went up to the hay loft, a remnant of the earlier days of his business, and brought down an old book of receipts. On the top next to my name was a pre-imprinted date of 194-_, on top, which even then was from a generation or so ago. Their bottles would date from around that period in time-like the bill itself, caught in a time warp of history..
OFFERED TODAY ARE TWO BOTTLES FROM SCHOLZ BROS. WITH MATCHING TOPS. BOTH ARE BLUE IN SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT SHADES . BOTH HAVE THEIR TRADEMARK STARS REMINISCENT OF THE OLD BEER SYMBOLS, RATHER THAN THE STAR OF DAVID. THEY STATE SHOLZ BROS. PHONE FLUSHING 9-1576 AND 15-46 125 ST COLLEGE POINT, L.I.  THIS WAS FROM THE ERA WHEN QUEENS WHICH IS ON LONG ISLAND GEOGRAPHICALLY  AS BROOKLYN IS AS WELL, HAD MORE OF AN ASSOCIATION WITH RURAL PLACES LIKE NASSAU COUNTY AND SUFFOLK COUNTY-ALSO ON LONG ISLAND, THAN THE CITY OF NEW YORK, WHICH THEY WERE PART OF. UP UNTIL 1898 QUEENS COUNTY AND NASSAU COUNTY WERE ONE COUNTY AND GREATER NEW YORK CITY DIDN'T EXIST.
OUR BOTTLES ARE MEANT FOR DISPLAY.
ALL AUCTIONS BELONG TO MY WIFE SELTZERLADY.
I STILL DELIVER THE SELTZER AND WILL NEVER SELL ANY OF MY BOTTLES IF YOU SEE ME AROUND, BUT WILL TALK TO ALMOST ANYONE ABOUT THEM.
